We’re lucky to have some fantastic visiting speakers for our London-based courses, from top publishers and editors such as Mary Mount, and Louisa Joyner, to writers as diverse as William Boyd and Jess Kidd. Recently we were delighted to welcome back our regular guest Jeffrey Archer. He came in to speak to our three-month course, alongside his literary agent and Curtis Brown Chairman, Jonathan Lloyd. Jeffrey is one of the world’s bestselling novelists, a master storyteller and a compelling speaker, so his visits are always a treat for our students.

Jeffrey likes to set our students the task of writing a self-contained 100 word story, after which he reads their work and chooses his favourite (you can read Jeffrey’s own 100-word story here). On this occasion the winner was Janine Hollinworth. Here’s her story, ‘The Gown’:

THE GOWN

The whole affair is too much; the flowers, the ceremony, the reception. Choosing my dress was the hardest part. I went with traditional, classic. I’ll be on display, after all.

I turn the diamond ring on my finger. He knows, deep down, I have already left.

‘I’m sorry,’ I say. ‘I can’t do this.’

‘Okay.’ His voice cracks and I’m swallowed by a wave of panic.

‘I want to be buried in your dressing gown, instead,’ I say. ‘Wrapped in you.’

My husband of fifty-three years kisses my head.

‘Whatever you want, love. It’s your day, not mine’
