We’re doing it again – yes we are! If you didn’t make it to our free day-long event for new novelists last year – or, frankly, even if you DID make it and would like to come along a second time – then register now on the Foyles website for Discovery Day II, on 16th November, 10.45am – 6pm at Foyles Charing Cross Road, London. And this year the Curtis Brown agents will be joined by our sister agency Conville & Walsh, bringing even more experience and energy to the day and making it an even bigger event.
Discovery Day gives the opportunity for new writers to pitch their novel-in-progress one-to-one to an agent, getting professional feedback on their idea and their first page in one-to-one pitching sessions in the Foyles Gallery. There will also be a ‘surgery’ in the Foyles cafe where writers get answers to their questions about publishing, literary agenting and writing. A panel event in the Gallery at 5pm, featuring S J Watson, author of the hit debut novel Before I Go To Sleep; literary agents Clare Conville and Jonny Geller and a leading publisher (tba), will discuss the importance of the debut novel in today’s competitive literary scene, and will give advice to new writers on how to make their mark with their own first novel.
So over the next couple of months, the agents and assistants from Curtis Brown and Conville & Walsh, whose working lives are usually focussed on spotting and selling talent and working with existing clients to shape their novels for today’s competitive marketplace, will roll up their sleeves to undertake such outlandish tasks as designing posters, planning shop window displays and creating complex pitching schedules in excel, all in the very exciting name of Discovery. There’ll be more on the countdown to Discovery Day very soon on this blog …
An finally – last year Foyles had allocated all 350 places within 2 days of announcement. Register now to avoid disappointment, and see you in November!
As well as expert teaching from published authors, all our novel-writing courses offer dedicated modules on submitting your novel to literary agents – and include sessions on writing a synopsis and preparing a covering letter. Click for more information or to apply for our creative writing courses.
