Applications for the Curtis Brown Creative six-month creative-writing course have now closed, and we’ve now offered places to the 15 writers who – we felt – provided the strongest submissions. We will be running other courses and there will be further opportunities to work with some of the UK’s top authors and literary agents – though this course’s teaching line-up of Tony Parsons, Liz Jensen, Nikita Lalwani, Christopher Wakling and Anna Davis will undoubtedly take some beating.
Frankly, we were inundated with applications, and if postbags – rather than digital inboxes – were still used for such things, we’d be tempted to use the word ‘bulging’ (and not in the EL James sense of the word). Submissions came in from as far afield as Pakistan, Switzerland and, erm, East Sussex. And the synopses and sample chapters we’ve spent the past few days looking through have thrown up fictional backdrops as diverse as post-apocalyptic London, futuristic Siberian prison camps and fictional African states. A particularly memorable cast-list of characters has included everything from talking dogs, footballing pigeons and wrestling octopi to heroin-addled teashop workers, 18th-century Cornish smugglers and the intake of a 1980s polytechnic.
The quality of the synopses and writing samples was very high indeed, and it took a while to work our way through the large number of submissions – some of which seriously polarised opinion. If you weren’t lucky enough to be offered a place this time around, please keep an eye on our website for details of future courses run by the UK’s only agent-led creative-writing school. And, in the meantime, carry on writing that novel! You’ve got a few months now to polish it up and get it ready for the next round of submissions.
As well as expert teaching from published authors, all our novel-writing courses offer dedicated modules on submitting your novel to literary agents – and include sessions on writing a synopsis and preparing a covering letter. Click for more information or to apply for our creative writing courses.
