As a writing school that’s constantly on the lookout for new talent, we at Curtis Brown Creative are rubbing our hands with excitement at the prospect of this weekend’s Discovery Day event. Held on Saturday (16 November) at Foyles bookshop on London’s Charing Cross Road, the day will see aspiring novelists queuing up to pitch their ideas – speed-dating style – to the agents from Curtis Brown and our sister agency Conville & Walsh. And it’ll be a wonderful opportunity for we at CBC to come face-to-face with some literary stars of the future.
The day will also involve a ‘surgery’, which will give writers the opportunity to ask general questions about writing, agenting and publishing. And a special panel event – featuring bestselling author SJ Watson, Curtis Brown’s Jonny Geller, Conville & Walsh’s Clare Conville and David Shelley, group publisher at Little, Brown – will consider the importance of the debut novel and offer advice to new writers hoping to find that elusive publishing deal.
The bad news is that Discovery Day is an all-ticket event and those tickets were snapped up quicker than copies of Morrissey’s autobiography in the bookshops of Fallowfield. The good news, though, is that anyone with a computer and a modem can join in with some aspects of the day.
As such a major part of Discovery Day is giving writers the opportunity to meet with agents, we’ve scheduled a series of Twitter ‘chats’ – in which we invite you to ask the agents at Curtis Brown and Conville & Walsh anything you like. You can either send your questions in to our Twitter handle (@cbcreative) or include the hashtag #DiscoveryDay in your tweets (we’ll be monitoring both). We’ll be accepting questions up to 24 hours before the event begins – though please feel free to send them in during the Q&A sessions, too. Here’s who’ll be online during the day (though times, as always, are subject to change):
11.00am–11.30am – Alex Christofi
12.00pm–12:30pm – Gordon Wise
1.00pm–1.30pm – Karolina Sutton
2.00pm–2.30pm – Sue Armstrong
3.00pm–3.30pm – Jonny Geller
We’ll also be tweeting photos, updates and Wildean wit in 140 characters or less throughout the day, so please follow us if you don’t already. See you online on Saturday!
As well as expert teaching from published authors, all our novel-writing courses offer dedicated modules on submitting your novel to literary agents – and include sessions on writing a synopsis and preparing a covering letter. Click for more information or to apply for our creative writing courses.
