Huge congratulations to author Jo Jakeman (above), who recently became the 32nd former Curtis Brown Creative student to get a book deal. Her debut novel, the psychological thriller Sticks and Stones, will be published by Harvill Secker in July 2018.
Jo – who lives in Derbyshire – studied on one of our online writing courses in Spring 2016, taught by Lisa O’Donnell, and went on to be the 2016 winner of the prestigious Friday Night Live Award at York Festival of Writing, where she was also shortlisted for Best Opening Chapter.
Sticks and Stones tells the story of three very different women who have all had the misfortune to be romantically involved with the same abusive man, one after the other. However, one day, these unlikely allies decide it’s time for revenge.
‘I’m really excited to be publishing Jo Jakeman’s debut thriller on the Harvill Secker crime list,’ says Jade Chandler, the publisher’s editorial director for crime and thrillers. ‘Sticks and Stones has a brilliantly clever and refreshing conceit, as well as being packed with memorable, likeable characters. Jo’s a fantastic writer and I know she’s got a bright future ahead of her.’
