CBC speaker becomes the new Children’s Laureate

by Rufus Purdy Our Courses

We were delighted to hear the fantastic news that the acclaimed author and long-time friend of Curtis Brown Creative Malorie Blackman has been made the eighth Children’s Laureate. Malorie – who inherits the role from The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom author Julia Donaldson – is the first black laureate, and will use her position to draw attention to the lack of black and Asian children in picture books.

‘We need more books that are specifically about the British BME [black and minority ethnic] experience,’ she says. ‘And that’s why I bang the drum for more diversity and not having this idea that if a book has got pictures of a black or Asian child then it’s going to have a limited market.’

Previous Children’s Laureates have included Quentin BlakeJacqueline WilsonAnne FineMichael Rosen and Anthony Browne, and Malorie can look forward to receiving a medal and a bursary of £15,000 to reflect her lifetime’s contribution to children’s literature. Before that, though, the author of the groundbreaking Noughts & Crosses series can look forward to being grilled by our Writing for Children Course students. She will be appearing alongside Horrid Henry author Francesca Simon at our special Writing Saturday on 29th June, where she’ll be talking about her passion for children’s writing and fielding question- many of which, no doubt, will be about her new role. We hope she brings that medal.
