The Breakthrough Story So Far

Meet the talented under-represented writers we've been working with through our free courses, scholarships and mentoring.
Breakthrough Novel-Writing Course for Black Writers Feb 2021

Spring 2021

The Breakthrough Writers’ Programme opened in Spring 2021 with a series of courses, mentoring and scholarships for Black writers and for writers with low income.

The free opportunities for under-represented writers that have already taken place include:

  • An intensive five-day online Novel-Writing Course for 15 Black Writers, with tutors Jacob Ross and Laura Barnett (group pictured above)
  • A nine-month Mentoring Programme for 5 Black Writers, which began in March 2021
  • Four sponsored scholarships (for Black writers and writers with low income), providing fully funded places on our selective-entry writing courses – see below for full details
  • An intensive five-day online Novel-Writing Course for 15 Writers with Low Income, with tutors Jake Arnott and Cathi Unsworth (group pictured below)
  • A nine-month Mentoring Programme for 5 Writers with Low Income, which began in May 2021

We are currently accepting applications to a variety of scholarship places and for our next round of Breakthrough Mentoring, five talented disabled writers will receive nine months of mentoring from a published author. This mentoring will run from October 2021 to July 2022, the deadline to apply is Sunday 19 September.

Our objective is to seek out talented writers, who would not otherwise have joined our creative writing courses, and give them the best of our tuition and mentoring, delivered by successful author-tutors, literary agents and publishers. We hope that our support and expertise will help writers maximise the potential of their works-in-progress and pitch them with confidence to the book industry.

Our Breakthrough writers say

Your course exceeded my expectations and they were pretty high already… I was amazed at how rewarding learning can be online and feel it was a lot to do with the personal input of tutors and staff and the mix of forum, one to one and group work.

Kim Squirell
Breakthrough Novel-Writing Course Feb 2021

Writing is something of a solitary experience, having the opportunity to interact with other writers and published authors in an open forum was an invaluable experience which I will cherish always.

Basil Creese

Thank you so much! I had several lightbulb moments during the course. I feel there’s been a shift in how I will write from now on.

Clementine Burnley

This course was fantastic and has helped me feel more confident.
