Sumayya Usmani
Sumayya Usmani is a Pakistani-born food writer and mentor. Sumayya won the Scottish Book Trust’s Next Chapter Award 2021 for her memoir, Andaza: a memoir of food, flavour and finding freedom in the Pakistani Kitchen (Murdoch Books, 2023).
She is the author of two cookbooks: Summers Under the Tamarind Tree (Frances Lincoln, 2016), which won Best First Cookbook in the Gourmand Cookbook Awards in 2016, and Mountain Berries and Desert Spice (Frances Lincoln, 2017), which was shortlisted for Best Cookbook of the Year at the Food & Travel Magazine Awards.
Sumayya is a regular on Radio 4’s The Kitchen Cabinet with Jay Rayner and her writing has featured in the Guardian, Telegraph, New York Times, BBC Good Food and Delicious among others. She is an experienced creative writing mentor and runs online workshops for food writers.
